You could also try for a school with a museum nearby with the sort of collection you'd like to work with and volunteer, or once you've started school, see if they have an internship. Or even better, fund your own internship w/ a grant! Most museums won't turn down free help. It may take a little while to get where you want to go, but you'll be exposed to all kinds of opportunities along the way.
