Position Description/Responsiblities:
Dominican University’s Rebecca Crown Library seeks an innovative and user-oriented Archivist and Special Collections Librarian. The successful candidate works both independently and collaboratively to manage the Archives and Special Collections unit of the Crown Library, including acquisitions; collection maintenance, technical services (as required), reference, outreach, policy and instruction.

The Rebecca Crown Library is a campus destination that houses a collection of over 230,000 volumes, and subscribes to 150 databases with access to more than 29,600 unique full-text periodicals. The library fosters innovative services and experienced, respected and engaged faculty.

The successful Archivist and Special Collections Librarian will be the Library’s primary expert in Archives management and the history of Dominican University. This position will work with work with internal and external audiences to supply materials on request for development opportunities and fact-finding purposes, providing specialized reference and instruction and promoting library services. This position will also be Ad-hoc preservation officer for the library, consulting on the care and treatment of print collections when required. The Archivist and Special Collections Librarian will hire, train and supervise student employees, interns and volunteers.

The Archivist and Special Collections Librarian will work closely with University departments in the retention process and calendar for documents designated for Archives.

The Librarian will be responsible for creating finding aids, collection inventories and maintaining the Special Collections website and related copyright permissions. Maintains digital archives and participates in the planning and implementation of other library digital projects and initiatives. In addition, this position is responsible for the maintenance of a server dedicated for electronic journal management and the migrating / archiving the content of World Libraries and future online Dominican University publications.

The Archivist and Special Collections Librarian is a tenure-track faculty position reporting to the University Librarian. Duties will also include reference desk service hours (including Friday, 5 – 9 pm), serving as liaison to one or more academic departments and providing relevant instruction sessions. The successful candidate will engage in scholarly activities and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with the library and university standards for tenure.

Desired Qualifications:
Required: ALA-accredited Master's degree in library or information science. Experience working in a university archives. Must be able to apply standard archival techniques in the appraisal, arrangement and description of historical records, photographs, ephemera, related materials and rare book collections; must be able to write clearly, accurately, and succinctly. This position calls for strong communications skills and the ability to work as a team-member and independently in project-oriented situations; ability to establish and maintain working relationships with colleagues at all levels; ability to meet deadlines. Ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing environment. Successful candidates will be able to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment. Excellent organizational and analytical skills, with attention to detail. Superior technology skills with a demonstrated knowledge of HTML, Access, Excel, Office Suite, CONTENTdm and related software and hardware and peripherals associated with digital projects; demonstrated knowledge of current trends in the processing and description of archival manuscripts collections and digitization of archival material. Demonstrated experience in the creation finding aids, collection inventories. Experience working with databases, scanning materials and building web pages. Demonstrated experience with OJS journal management software. Must be able to lift and carry heavy boxes, kneel, climb ladders and tolerate dust. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required. Student supervisory experience and working with volunteers required. Ability to meet tenure requirements.

Preferred: Knowledge of Dominican University and Rosary College history a plus. Experience with writing or administrating grants preferred. Some experience working with rare books desirable.
