I have recently read some information advising against mylar encapsulation of archival documents. I'm wondering what are the pros and cons on this subject. Are other archives still encapsulating?

We have a large collection of maps which we encapsulate. I too have heard arguements for and against encapsulation. Since our maps get used quite a bit by researchers though it's the best method we have of protecting them.

This is a great link that discusses the pros and cons of encapsulation as it pertains to disasters. It still doesn't clear up all of my questions for and against encapsulation, but it does give you something to think about. We're still encapsulating damaged maps to give them stability for use by researchers, but I'm always willing to hear the other side of the story
