Position Description/Responsiblities:
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is seeking a Curator of African Art. Under the supervision of the Curator in Charge of AOA, the Curator of African Art provides support for the development, management, and day-to-day operations of the African Collection.

Desired Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Training:
A Ph.D. in African art history preferred. Reading and speaking knowledge of French or German.

Work Experience:
Requires at least five years of curatorial experience in the field of African art.

Skills and Abilities:
-Expert knowledge of the methods, techniques and procedures involved in the maintenance and care of a museum collection of fine arts

-Expert knowledge of art history; the national and international community of art scholars; and the art market

-Ability to effectively teach about African arts and inspire viewers through public lectures, gallery presentations, video presentations and print media

-Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public and outside organizations.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills

-Familiarity and proficiency with museum collections management software

-Adherence to deadlines

-Flexibility in meeting shifting demands and priorities

-Strong interpersonal and organization skills

-Desire to function in a team-oriented environment

-Ability to achieve and sustain best curatorial practices and ethical standards of the field

-Sensitivity and awareness of cultural property Issues
