Kohl Children’s Museum supports parents, caregivers and teachers in their crucial role of facilitating children’s learning through hands-on, interactive environments, programs, resource materials and modeling. Ranked Number 6 in the country by Parent’s Magazine, the Museum takes pride in nurturing the creativity and imaginations of young children in a safe setting with exhibits that promote interaction between adults and children. The Museum engages children of diverse backgrounds and abilities to play and learn together. Reaching out beyond the Glenview, Illinois facility to bring its expertise and exhibits to the Greater Chicago and suburban classrooms, childcare sites and other organizations serving young children, the Museum has established itself as an essential community resource and learning center for all young children.

The Opportunity: Vice President of Development

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Vice President of Development is responsible for planning, managing and implementing the development strategy, driving all contributed income for the Kohl Children’s Museum in support of its current and long-term strategic objectives. This position will ensure the effective delivery of the Museum’s vision, mission and brand through its fundraising programs. The Vice President will develop and implement strategies to build upon current relationships and develop new connections with individual donors, corporations, foundations, government and others that will increase contributed income, and planned and endowment revenue.

The Vice President of Development will possess a proven track record in providing creative and innovative leadership in resource development and in promoting and administering dynamic fundraising strategies. The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills in the full spectrum of development activities including capital campaigns, with a special emphasis in soliciting major gifts of $100,000 and more. She or he will be self-motivated, results-oriented, creative, entrepreneurial, highly energetic and intelligent, with exceptional interpersonal and organization skills.

Primary Performance Objectives

Institutional Giving
•Lead efforts to design, implement and evaluate strategies for the stewardship of all aspects of fundraising including individuals, corporations, foundations and government.
•Play a key role in the execution and completion of the Museum’s current campaign.
•Establish a presence in the community to increase the organization’s visibility, identify opportunities and programs to engage new donors, and maintain grant opportunities and relationships with current and past donors.
•Build and diversify funding base and strategically match grant opportunities with programmatic priorities.
•Develop grant proposals for foundations, corporations and governmental opportunities.
•Supervise donor and gift acknowledgement, recordkeeping and report requirements.

Major Gifts
•Develop and implement a major gifts program to expand the cultivation and engagement of new partners that will increase the number and size of gifts over time.
•Deliver the highest of professional standards while demonstrating the sensitivity necessary to successfully engage and interact with sophisticated donors.
•Facilitate the tasks that must be undertaken to advance the work and progress of the Museum, including preparing materials and information that will be used in presentations to prospective donors.

Online Giving
•Design and implement an online outreach program to expand the cultivation and engagement of new members and increase online donations.
•Research, develop and implement a strategy to integrate phone and online giving to allow for multiple channels of contacts for donors and members.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
•Participate as an active member of the Museum’s Senior Team.
•Collaborate with other Museum departments to ensure the seamless flow of information needed for activities such as writing grants and other reports as well as external communications.
•Create and sustain strong working relationships with the President and CEO, Board of Trustees, Women’s Board, Board of Governors, and members of the Museum’s Senior Team.
•Develop annual fundraising budget, benchmarks and metrics to ensure budgetary goals are met or exceeded.
•Manage and mentor fundraising team and two Auxiliary Boards.
•Maintain office systems to support all development projects and operations.

The Qualified Candidate

The Vice President of Development must have the ability to build strong relationships with the Museum’s Board of Trustees and its two Auxiliary Boards. This position will have a collaborative partnership with the President and CEO and will participate as a member of the Museum’s Senior Team, leading a department of three to four staff members.

Specific requirements include:

•Passion for Kohl Children’s Museum’s mission
•Bachelor’s Degree
•Minimum of 7–10 years of comprehensive development experience in similar roles of increasing responsibility and leadership in the nonprofit sector
•Demonstrated success in securing multiple major gifts ($100,000+) from individuals, foundations and corporations
•Administrative and management experience related to the development function
•Ability to communicate effectively
•Knowledge of and experience working with Chicago’s philanthropic community
•Team oriented
•Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of computer programs, specifically Word, Power Point and Excel, as well as, Raiser’s Edge for Windows
