I have seen some discussions recently regarding items to keep in a "disaster recovery kit" in addition the normal protocols followed in a Disaster Plan. Callie Stapp was kind enough to provide me with Historic Alexandria's list as well as the list created by Pam West of NPS through their experiences in Katrina and other disasters. Hope these documents help you as you update and create your own plans!

With all of the severe weather across the country the past few months, I've seen a lot of talk about emergency resources. Here are some sites that might help you out if you experience a natural disaster:
FEMA's website has information on what to do before, during, and after a flood plus a quick guide to saving photographs. http://www.fema.gov/hazard/flood/spixs.shtm The Library of Congress has "Emergency Drying Procedures for Water Damaged Collections" http://www.loc.gov/preserv/emerg/dry.html The Minnesota Historical Society has "Emergency Salvage Procedures for Wet Items" http://www.mnhs.org/preserve/conserv...emergency.html The Iowa State University Extension office has "Freeze Flood-Damaged Photos, Documents, Books" http://www.extension.iastate.edu/inf...nts_books.html The American Institute for Conservation has "TIPS FOR THE CARE OF WATER-DAMAGED FAMILY HEIRLOOMS AND OTHER VALUABLES" http://aic.stanford.edu/library/onli...er/tentip.html The Heritage Emergency National Task Force has "Disaster Resources for the Public" http://www.heritagepreservation.org/...rricanePub.htm The Northeast Document Conservation Center has additional listings of disaster planning and recovery resources on the Internet as well as preservation leaflets http://www.nedcc.org/services/disaster.php The National Park Service offers a "Primer of Disaster Preparedness, Management & Response" http://www.nps.gov/history/museum/pu...primintro.html AND Conserve-O-Grams http://www.nps.gov/history/museum/pu.../cons_toc.html The Image Permanence Institute offers "A Consumer Guide for the Recovery of Water-Damaged Traditional and Digital Prints" http://www.imagepermanenceinstitute....aterdamage.pdf Did I miss any? Good luck and let us know if you need any help!!! Last edited by StephGaub; 09-13-2008 at 04:20 AM. |

Heritage Preservation has created a new webpage in response to the Midwest floods. There is also information on California wildfires and the 2005 hurricanes.

To help those affected by the floods, the Western Association for Art Conservation (WAAC) has made their September 2005 (vol 27, no 3) issue of the WAAC Newsletter which was devoted to salvage and response available for free download until August 31, 2008. After that date, it will be available for $10. Here's the link...

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has a document on their website entitled TREATMENT OF FLOOD-DAMAGED OLDER AND HISTORIC BUILDINGS.
Here's the link: http://www.preservationnation.org/is...od_booklet.pdf They also have a bunch of other resources of interest to home-owners and cultural institutions: http://www.preservationnation.org/is...returning.html Last edited by StephGaub; 07-01-2008 at 11:05 PM. |

Iron Mountain has created a Hurricane Preparedness Guide. While it does not deal with museum collections specifically, it does have good information regarding your business in general. It is in PDF format.

Here is a link to a podcast from the New England Archivists' Fall 2008 Meeting. The links also contain the speaker's slide show to go along with the talk - what a GREAT resource!!!
Working with First Responders and Emergency Managers On November 14th, 2008 Sara Wolf gave the opening plenary for the New England Archivists Fall Meeting. She is the Director of the Northeast Museum Services Center of the National Park Service and has worked in emergency response management since she was a first responder to hurricane Isabel in 2003. She has since formed a Cultural Resources Emergency Response Team in the National Park Service and worked as the first cultural resources specialist to be included as part of a Type I, National Incident Management Team for response to Katrina.
