Hi,
I am the Curator of Collections at a small museum in Kankakee, IL and it's that time of year that all museum nerds love...restocking supplies. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with "museum wax" or "museum gel" for exhibit stabilization? Are there benefits to one over the other? I have tried to find product reviews, but professional views on the products have been limited. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Sarah

While I have never used Museum Gel, I have used Museum Wax and advise against it. Also, conservators have begun to speak out against its use as well.
It is extremely difficult to remove from the object once you have put it on it, and it makes a mess. The only time we use it is if it is to keep a replica or other item that is not part of the permanent collection. You're better off making some other type of inexpensive mount to keep objects in place. |
