Replacing tungsten floods in a gallery

Now that the age of tungsten lighting is coming to an end, what should we use to replace our gallery flood lights?

Granted, these floods use a LOT of energy and anything to reduce the utility bill sounds like a great idea. That said, simply screwing an energy efficient bulb does not work. For one thing, those bulbs do not fit the fixtures, and because they are florescent, UV light is increased manifold times.

What is a poor curator to do? Do we consider switching to halogen bulbs? Or energy saving bulbs and UV filters? Or ....

My opinion is that neither compact fluorescents, nor LED's have reached the point in color or beam quality to be effective in museums or galleries. We use tungsten-halogen lamps with UV filters for pretty much all of our galleries. What specific lamps do you use now? Maxlite (www.maxlite.com) makes CFLS that mimic the shape and color of some tungsten and incandescent lamps.

Thanks for the info about Maxlites. I will take a look at their product line.

I had not considered using LEDs. An interesting idea. I agree that LEDs are not quite ready for prime-time use, but certainly worth keeping an eye on as their efficiency and life span are way beyond the typical fluorescent bulb let alone the old fashioned tungsten bulbs we use now,

We are using 75w tungsten floods that snap into the hanging fixture ring. Besides being power hungry, they burn out all too frequently. For the time being, replacing the fixtures to accommodate energy efficient lighting is only a distant possibility. But then, I am doing my homework now by looking at the long-term for a solution that is energy efficient, low UV emission and long life.
