- Vicki Wawerchak is Director of Heal the Bay’s marine environmental education facility, the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium. She has a bachelor’s degree in marine biology with a minor in chemistry. Vicki joined Heal the Bay as the Key to the Sea manager in 2001 and moved to the Aquarium as Education Manager when Heal the Bay took over its management in 2003. She was promoted to Aquarium Director in July 2005.Vicki oversees all operations of the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, including hiring and training staff, marketing the Aquarium’s programs and coordinating special events. She is also involved in media communication; formulating and overseeing budgets; developing and writing strategic plans; grant writing and reporting; fundraising; and setting the direction for the Aquarium advisory board. Vicki has 16 years of marine biology and environmental education experience writing curriculum, designing California content standards-aligned lesson plans and activities, and teaching on boats, islands, in tidepools and various aquarium facilities. She is connected to the aquarium science community and is a participant on many education advisory boards throughout the Southern California region. She is an avid diver, kayaker and snorkeler.
