Position Description/Responsiblities:
The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) will celebrate the similarities and differences of the world’s cultures as expressed through music – a language common to us all. With musical instruments from every country in the world, MIM will pay homage to the history and diversity of instruments and introduce museum guests to their varied and unique sounds. MIM will be an engaging, entertaining and informative experience, in which the uninitiated and the knowledgeable, the young and the old will feel welcome.

Job Description: Volunteer Coordinator

MIM seeks a highly motivated individual with demonstrated leadership abilities to plan, direct, implement and evaluate a comprehensive Volunteer Program. The Volunteer Coordinator will actively recruit, screen, and place volunteers within a variety of departments to help provide the human resources needed to open MIM in April 2010 and continue to support the mission going forward. The Coordinator will build a positive relationship between volunteers and MIM team members to deliver loyal, enthusiastic, and competent volunteer support to assist the MIM team in their operations, while providing a stimulating and enjoyable experience for the volunteers.

Responsibilities:

Plan and actively initiate recruitment of the volunteer force, develop volunteer position descriptions, and form a retention strategy for volunteers.
Screen volunteer applications and conduct interviews and background and reference checks to determine appropriateness for placement in program.
Coordinate departmental interviews and ensure clearances for working with children, when appropriate.
Produce and update volunteer application forms, volunteer manual, and other appropriate documents
Design and maintain database for preserving and accessing records on each volunteer, including application information, total hours of service (monthly, yearly, and to-date), dates of service, positions held, duties completed, evaluation of work, and recognition and awards received.
Develop and conduct orientation program for volunteers. Work with department Managers to ensure specialized training is developed and conducted.
Provide point of contact for all volunteers.
Develop, manage, and maintain a robust evaluation program for all volunteers.
Serve as MIM’s liaison to the general public regarding opportunities for individuals to offer their time and talents to support MIM, e.g., speak to groups, local corporations, and other venues about MIM’s volunteer opportunities.
Develop and administer appreciation and recognition programs for volunteers.

Desired Qualifications:
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum 3-5 years of experience managing a volunteer program in the Phoenix area
Excellent MS Office skills.
Ability to think critically, problem solve, work independently, and excel in a high performance culture.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a wide variety of people.
Love for world music and musical instruments is a plus!
Other:

This position reports to the Human Resources Manager.
Located in Tempe, AZ until mid-December 2009; located in Phoenix, AZ at museum site after December 14.
Evening and weekend work will be required, as necessary.
